Trailer Fairings with

Trailer Side Guards (sometimes called side guards for trucks, trailer guard rails, or underride guards) are permanently welded guards beneath the underbelly of the trailer that help improve safety for other motorists by restricting access to the undercarriage of the trailer.
Side Guards are different than traditional side skirts in that their main function is safety and as such they often provide little aerodynamic trailer benefit. In fact, such systems can reduce fuel savings because of the additional weight and increased aerodynamic drag of welded supports and metal struts.

While side guards are mandatory in many parts of the world, they remain optional in certain jurisdictions with opponents of side guard regulation criticizing them as imperfect safety solutions ripe with their own drawbacks.

Further, fixed fairings provide limited fuel savings while in optimized wheel positions where underbelly coverage occurs, but lose aerodynamic trailer benefits in other unoptimized wheel positions. They also provide little protection against turbulence, road spray and road debris that can negatively affect other road users.
